The Lord Dudley Hotel nestled among the leafy eastern suburbs in Paddington is one of Sydney’s oldest, most beloved and renowned English pubs. It has been an institution to loyal locals, tourists and passers-by alike for over 35 years since Jamie Couche restored it to the English glory days of Britannia where Branston pickles accompanied pork pies and Pints of beer slapped against polished wooden bars.
Unlike no other, The Lord Dudley is still family run. There won’t be any plastic schooner glasses nor will you be herded into a line to order a beer or a meal. Walk in from the street into the ivy covered red-bricked English pub and be embraced by the personal touch and unique experience the Lord Dudley has to offer and have a bloody pint!
'The pub also has something rarely seen in Australia and taken for granted in the UK: drinking on the footpath outside. Come warm weather, punters and their dogs sprawl on to the pavement, schooner in hand. It’s a scene you could imagine quite unchanged since the days when local quarrymen – who worked in the nearby sandstone quarry until its closure in 1966 and lived in the surrounding terrace houses – would come for a drink after clocking off.
The pub is full of history like this, and much of it, like the Lord Dudley portrait, can be discovered on the walls. Honor points out Tooth & Co. receipt from 1923 that details four weeks’ rent, costing £2 a week, from the days when the pub also provided accommodation'
'Elsewhere on the walls are portraits of Les Darcy – the Australian boxer and folk hero who died in America in 1917, aged just 21. Before that, he had moved to Sydney (from nearby Maitland), to focus on his boxing career, and while working a part-time job at the Lord Dudley, became engaged to Winnie O’Sullivan – the publican’s daughter at the time. His training ground was located where The Garden restaurant is now'
