Maroubra Beach will become Insta-famous this July thanks to a temporary art installation that includes a 3D perspective mural and augmented reality Instagram filter that will bring it to life. The installation will run for two weeks from Sat, July 11, 2020 and will replace the annual Beach Breaks Carnival.
“Each year our Beach Breaks Carnival celebrates the surf culture of Maroubra and the unique place it holds in Australia’s surfing history,” commented Randwick Mayor Danny Said. “This year, due to current COVID-19 restrictions, we’re shining the spotlight on Maroubra Beach in a different but no less exciting way. Beach Breaks 2020 is sure to draw people to Maroubra Beach to take photos of themselves and their mates catching a wave, without getting wet.
“In addition, we’ll run a competition that allows people to enter the photos of themselves catching the wave, which will put them in the running to win one of the daily prizes offered by our local businesses. The past few months have been challenging for many of them and we’re pleased to be able to give them a little boost as we celebrate all the things that make Maroubra great.”
The large artwork will be located on the Maroubra promenade, near the corner of Marine Parade and McKeon Street, and will allow people to take a photo of themselves surfing a big wave. With the addition of the Instagram filter the beach scene will come to life, complete with a moving crab, dolphin and seagull.
To enter the competition, participants can scan the QR code near the artwork, which will download an augmented reality filter, upload the image to Instagram, tag @RandwickCouncil and use the hashtag #beachbreaks2020. Winners will be selected at the end of each day.
The artwork and AR filter have been created by Vandal Sydney. The following businesses have contributed prizes for the competition.
