You love your pets and you love to travel the world. Even though you love seeing new places and revisiting old favourites the one thing that is always the most difficult is leaving your pets behind. It can be a really stressful time for pet owners. Finding that loving and trusted care for your pets can often be difficult.

Here are some of my favourite tips on how to make sure your furry family members are happy, healthy and cared for while you’re gone!

Plan ahead. Before taking off give yourself time to find the right person or service to care for them. Consider the dates your leaving, if it’s at peak holiday times get organised early to book your pet care.

Leave your pets at home. We understand some pets are happier at home in their own environment with their usual smells and surroundings. A lot of pet owners have more than one pet and possibly fish, rabbits, birds, chickens.. the list can go on and on. Having a professional pet watching service like – My Home Watch means they can stay in the comfort of their home. We come to visit each day for walks, play time, clean the grounds or cages and feeding time. This means they get to enjoy the comforts of being in their own home with minimal to no stress on your animal. Our professional service is a great alternative to pet sitters.

Insurance. Having a professional who is insured to care for your pets is a must. A lot of pet owners these days have pet insurance, but what about the people who care for your pets when you're not there? Using a professional service like My Home Watch can elevate this concern, as we are prepared for any emergencies that may arise while your pet is in our care.

Leave prepared. Leave your pets carer with detailed instructions about how to reach you if there’s a problem and you can’t be contacted. Your vet’s details, any microchips, your pets like and dislikes, food intake and meal requirements, medication, favorite toys, beds, blanket and an emergency contact if your unreachable. The more information the better. That way you can be assured that your pets carer can proceed until you can be reached. It makes it a lot easier for you to relax when you’re gone.

Collars and name tags. Even at home have your dog or cat wear a collar that has your phone number on it. You’ll be happy you did in case they ever get out, lost or try to run away. You have a better chance of finding your family member if they are tagged and chipped.

Communicate. Take a tip from ET: Phone home. Your pets love to hear your voice! Thanks to technology nowadays we can also visit “ in person ” thanks to Skype and Face Time. My Home Watch even offers a Pet Cam device so you can self-monitor your pets daily routine through an app on your smart device.
If the Pet Cam isn't for you, we will still send you daily pet reports, so your mind is at ease. We write daily reports on how they are doing, upload photos and videos or even face time pet owners if they wish.

Take your pet with you — in photo form. If you have photo of them slip it in your purse or wallet and pull it out when you are missing them.  Alternately you may have hundreds of photos of them on your smartphone. Sharing your photos with other animal lovers while you’re on holidays is always a great conversation maker.

Don’t make a big deal when you leave and return. Long goodbyes and hellos can make your pets feel nervous and can lead to separation anxiety. In order to help keep your pet calm walk out like you’ll be back in a minute and when you return greet them like it hasn’t been that long. Pretending like it’s not a big deal will help them think so too.

So can you travel and still be a fantastic pet owners? Of course! Our pets can survive and even thrive in our absence. With the right pet care service travelling more often is possible and you will have peace of mind knowing that your pets are being loved and cared .
