Woollahra Council has launched relief measures for small businesses in the local area to ease the economic impact of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) on businesses and workers. The Council’s announcement of relief measures, valued in excess of $5 million, follows the recent economic support packages from the Australian Government and State Government.
The Council’s relief and recovery measures are aimed at helping all small businesses, including pubs, clubs, cafes and restaurants which are from today restricted to take-away and delivery services as directed by the Australian Government to help slow the spread of COVID-19.
The support measures to be introduced from Tuesday 24 March include: -
- Rent relief for 6 months for all small business tenants of Council-owned businesses, and for the same period, no fees will be charged to any small business in the local government area for health, hygiene, licensing and fire safety inspections.
- All outdoor and footpath dining fees will be waived for a period of 6 months.
- Parking meters will be turned off from noon on Tuesday until further notice. Timed parking restrictions will remain in force to ensure adequate parking turnover for our commercial centres and retail shopping locations. Free one-hour parking is available at Kiaora Place, Cross Street and the Cosmopolitan Centre car parks in Double Bay,
- We will be paying all our small business suppliers within 14 days.
- Council calls on all landlords in the LGA to assist their tenants with rent relief and grant applications to fast-track funding support on offer from the Australian Government’s $189 billion economic recovery plan.
Mayor of Woollahra, Councillor Susan Wynne confirmed Woollahra Council’s commitment to doing what it could to soften the economic impact of the crisis on local small businesses.
- “We want to help local small businesses to remain viable during these tough times. We know there are very difficult challenges ahead for small businesses and their employees,” the Mayor said.
- “Our support package will be in place for six months because we know there is no short-term fix for the current crisis and we will be looking for further ways we can help and cut red-tape for businesses.
- “We all have a role to play in helping local businesses to get through this and I encourage everyone to continue to support local small businesses in any way they can.
- “In an effort to reduce the spread of COVID-19 and to ensure as much customer service continuity as possible for residents and businesses, Woollahra Council moved quickly on Monday 16 March to relocate all but frontline and critical service staff to work from home. We are here to help, and small businesses can call our customer service centre on 9391 7000.”
